Develop a Foundation in Sustainability Practices
Sustainability is the ability to meet current needs without endangering the ability for future generations to meet their needs. Those needs include environmental needs, social needs and economic needs.
The Sustainability Innovation and Outreach Minor was established in 2015 and is gaining popularity because of increasing interests in sustainability and potential job opportunities.
Students in this minor will develop an understanding of systems, approaches and application of sustainability. They will learn about key leaders and organizations influencing sustainability. Eventually, students develop a working knowledge of sustainability assessment, decision making tools, and training methods; and they develop professional and academic writing skills to support sustainability careers.
Required Courses
The two required courses for the minor are SUST 101 and SUST 495. SUST 101 helps students build a solid foundation about sustainability. SUST 495 is a capstone course that will help students develop and complete a research/service project with a sustainability theme that proposes a holistic solution.
As an interdisciplinary area, minor students may choose from a variety of elective courses, including topics in Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, English, Philosophy, Biology, Geography, Geology, Physics, Health and Economics. Taking four elective courses (12 credits) and using the perspective from two or more disciplines, students will make connections between different disciplinary domains that pertain to sustainability and integrate conflicting disciplinary insights and viewpoints.
