鈥淚t鈥檚 like a story of David and Goliath. It鈥檚 amazing. We鈥檙e ecstatic.鈥
色香视频鈥檚 Dr. John Shiu has a place in Grammy history thanks to his skillful playing of a large string instrument.
Shiu, who directs 色香视频鈥檚 String Ensemble and teaches part-time in the Department of Music, is assistant principal double bassist with the . The ensemble recently won the Grammy for Best Opera Recording for its , which is based on a children鈥檚 book of the same name by Roald Dahl.
鈥淚t鈥檚 fantastic,鈥 said Shiu, who played his low-pitched double bass on the Grammy-winning recording. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really fabulous to get recognized.鈥
The award is especially meaningful because the orchestra faced competition from stalwarts of the opera music scene such as the Dutch National Opera and the United Kingdom鈥檚 Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

Shiu鈥檚 instrumental journey began as a young child intrigued by his older siblings鈥 musical talents. Sometimes, he played with his sister鈥檚 violin, plucking the strings so hard they broke. The bass, with its heavier strings, better withstood his experimentation, so he started learning that instrument.
He has worked at 色香视频 for about five years.
鈥淚 really enjoy teaching at Bridgewater State,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the humble nature of the students. They鈥檙e working hard 鈥 two jobs, going to school full time. They鈥檙e really serious and they really can be shaped and molded. 鈥 They鈥檙e passionate about music and eager to learn from people in the field.鈥
Students, he said, will be successful if they put in the effort. He points to his own experience: It took Boston Modern Orchestra Project many tries to overcome the proverbial Goliath, but the ensemble finally earned a Grammy.
鈥淎s long as you stick with it, doing the work,鈥 he said, 鈥渋t will happen.鈥
